Beautiful Lesson From The Buddhist Story

Buddhist Fable of a King and His Four Wives

Once upon a time, there was a powerful king who had four wives.

The fourth wife had brought a lot of wealth for him. So, he was very fond of her.

His third wife was extremely beautiful. So he was very proud of her and used to show her off to other kings.

The second wife was very loving and caring. She would always help him in maintaining relationships with people. He loved and depended on her as well.

The first wife was his soulmate. She loved him immensely and supported him unconditionally. But he neither cared for her nor respected her. He always ignored her.

Then the fell sick and realised that he was going to die. But he was too scared to go alone through death and afterlife.

Hence he asked his fourth wife if she would accompany him. She flatly declined his request and told him that she would in fact remarry.

Then he asked his third wife. She too refused flatly.

When he asked his second wife, the lady had tears in her eyes and said she would at the most accompany him to his grave, but not any further.

The king was heartbroken and was too scared to go alone.

It was then that he heard his first wife, who was his soulmate told him not to worry and she would accompany him through lifetimes.  And would never leave him alone.

Analogy

The fourth wife represents the wealth we acquire during our lifetime that we feel very proud of.

The third wife represents physical beauty.

The second wife represents our family, friends.

The first wife represents our soul.

We give a lot of importance and feel proud of our physical beauty, wealth. When we die, they don’t accompany us.  The relatives and friends may accompany you till your funeral, not any further.  But your soul is the one that is always with you through lifetimes.

Moral of the story

Your physical body houses your soul. Hence take care of it without obsessing over it. Once you die it will stay back on the earth and merge with the soil.

Wealth is needed. There is nothing wrong with enjoying wealth that is acquired in an ethical way. But one must remember that it will go to someone else once you die.

It is very important to have harmony in all our relations. Friends and family are important. But one should love them with detachment.  As they can accompany you only till your funeral, not any further.

But your soul is all that you will have even after you die. So, it is of utmost importance to take care of your soul. Look within, know who you truly are. Find out what your higher purpose is on this planet. Dedicate time to be in service of humanity to enrich your soul.
