Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India. It is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. With a population of more than 6.5 million, it is one of the oldest metro cities in India.

Historically Chennai and Tamil Nadu were part of Chola, Pandian, Pallava , Nayak and Vijaya Nagara kingdoms. They encouraged literature, poetry, music, dance, which are still retained by the people of Tamil Nadu. And these kings also left an indelible mark on the land of Tamil Nadu by building magnificent Hindu temples with extraordinary architecture that are still standing tall in spite of natural calamities.
Tamil Nadu is known for its ancient temple architecture. Nearly 33,000 ancient temples, many at least 800 to 2000 years old, are found scattered all over Tamil Nadu.
Chennai is also famous for Kanjivaram Pattu sarees (silk sarees) and cotton sarees hand woven in Kancheepuram near Chennai. Kanjivaram silk saree weaving is a highly skilled hand-crafted textile, one of the finest in the world. You can also shop for South Indian Traditional gold jewellery and artificial ornaments in Chennai.
